UVRI WORKPLACE NOISE ASSESSMENT

UVRI WORKPLACE NOISE ASSESSMENT

The Medical Research Council/Uganda Virus Research Institute (MRC/UVRI) and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Uganda Research Unit is an internationally recognized centre of excellence. The MRC/UVRI clinical laboratory is a key component of and supports all the research studies conducted by the Unit. A freezer archive section which has logged, and data-based samples stored since the start of the unit was established. As part of its research activities, MRC/UVRI has biorepositories (freezer archive) that store biological samples. These are maintained at -80oC. Some of the staff work within these biorepositories and have been complaining about the noise levels within these rooms. MRC/UVRI contracted Tenvicon to undertake a workplace noise assessment.

Excessive noise at work can result in temporary or even permanent hearing loss. Workplace noise assessments and occupational noise monitoring need to be carried out to ensure that workers’ hearing is protected from excessive noise at their place of work. The noise survey/ assessment was limited to:

  • Biorepository Freezer Room 3
  • Liquid Nitrogen Plant
  • Freezer Room 2
  • Freezer Room 1
  • Rabbit House
